Got Questions?
Frequently Asked Questions
- Which RAW formats does FileCrank support?
- FileCrank converts Canon CR2 and CRW, Adobe DNG, Nikon NEF, Sony ARW, Olympus ORF, Panasonic RW2, and Fujifilm RAF. Canon CR3 is not yet supported β it uses a different container format that requires a separate decoder, planned for a future update.
- Will converting a RAW file to JPG reduce quality?
- RAW conversion always involves some processing because RAW is uncompressed sensor data, not a displayable image. FileCrank uses the High quality preset by default, which produces a JPG with minimal compression artefacts. For archival purposes, converting to TIFF instead of JPG avoids lossy compression entirely.
- Are the metadata and GPS tools private?
- Yes. The RAW Metadata Viewer, Image Geolocation Extractor, and EXIF Editor all run entirely in your browser using the File API β your file is never uploaded to our servers. For conversion tools (RAW to JPG, etc.), files are uploaded over HTTPS, processed immediately, and deleted within 1 hour.
- What is the maximum file size for RAW files?
- RAW conversion tools support files up to 100 MB. Most modern RAW files (50 MP cameras) fall well within this limit. Metadata viewer tools have no effective limit since they process files locally in your browser.
- Can I resize a photo without losing EXIF data?
- Yes. The Photo Resizer tool has a "Preserve EXIF" option that copies all metadata from the original to the resized output. This is enabled by default.
- What is the difference between EXIF, IPTC, and XMP metadata?
- EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is written by your camera and records technical data: shutter speed, aperture, ISO, GPS coordinates, and camera model. IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council) is used by photographers and photo agencies to add captions, copyright notices, and keywords. XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) is Adobe's extensible format that can store everything EXIF and IPTC store, plus custom fields. The EXIF Editor on FileCrank displays all three metadata standards in one view.
- How do I remove GPS location data from a photo before sharing it?
- Use the Photo Strip Location tool or the Remove Image Metadata tool. Both tools strip GPS coordinates and other sensitive location data from your photo's EXIF without altering the image itself. This runs entirely in your browser β your photo is never uploaded.
- What DPI should I use for printing vs web?
- For high-quality print (magazines, photo books), use 300 DPI. For standard desktop printing, 150-200 DPI is acceptable. For web display, DPI is irrelevant β only pixel dimensions matter, because screens measure in pixels, not dots. Use the DPI Converter tool to change the embedded DPI value in an image without resampling the pixels.
