What is DPI and why does it matter for printing?

DPI (dots per inch) tells a printer how many pixels to print per inch. A 3000×2000 pixel image printed at 300 DPI produces a 10×6.67 inch print. The same image at 72 DPI would be 41.7×27.8 inches. This tool changes the DPI metadata — it does not add or remove pixels.

What DPI should I use for printing?

300 DPI is the standard for professional print quality. 150 DPI works for large-format prints viewed from a distance. 72 DPI is standard for screens and web display.

Will changing DPI affect the pixel dimensions?

No. This tool changes only the embedded DPI metadata. The actual pixel count remains identical. This is intentional — use the Photo Resizer if you need to change pixel dimensions.

What formats are supported?

DPI Converter supports JPG, PNG, TIFF, and WebP input files.

My print lab says my image is too low resolution. Will changing DPI fix it?

It depends. If your image has enough pixels but the wrong DPI tag, changing the metadata will fix the issue. If the image genuinely lacks pixels (for example, a 800×600 image being printed at A3 at 300 DPI), you need to either resize the image or accept a lower print resolution.

Does changing DPI affect web or screen display?

No. Web browsers ignore DPI metadata entirely and display images pixel-for-pixel. DPI only affects how the image is sized when printed or placed in a document such as Word or InDesign.
