Recording video sideways or upside-down is one of the most common mistakes — and also one of the easiest to fix. Video Rotate & Flip corrects orientation in a few clicks: rotate 90°, 180°, or 270° to fix a portrait-shot landscape clip, or flip horizontally to mirror a selfie-mode recording where text and logos appear reversed.
This tool also serves creative purposes: flipping footage horizontally can create a mirrored composition, and rotating 90° can reframe vertical phone footage into a cinematic widescreen crop. Whatever the reason, the fix is immediate, runs in your browser, and produces a properly tagged output file that plays correctly on every device.
How to Rotate a Video Online

Upload your video
Drop any MP4, MOV, WebM, AVI, or MKV file onto the page. Files up to 50 MB are supported.
- 2
Choose rotation or flip
Select rotate 90° clockwise, 90° counter-clockwise, 180°, flip horizontal, flip vertical, or none.
- 3
Download your rotated video
Click Apply. FileCrank re-encodes the video with the new orientation. Files are deleted within 1 hour.
How Video Rotation and Flipping Works
Some video files store rotation as a metadata flag rather than actually rotating the encoded pixels — most phones do this. A player that reads the flag shows the video correctly; a player that ignores it shows it sideways. This tool applies the rotation to the actual pixel data (a transpose or flip transform on every frame) and removes the metadata flag, producing a file that plays correctly everywhere regardless of player compliance.
The pixel-level transform is handled by FFmpeg's `transpose` filter (for rotations) and `hflip`/`vflip` filters (for mirror operations). Because the frame geometry changes for 90° and 270° rotations — width and height swap — the encoder is re-invoked with the new dimensions. The operation runs fully in-browser via WebAssembly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my video playing sideways?
Videos recorded in portrait mode on a phone sometimes have incorrect orientation metadata. Use this tool to rotate 90° clockwise or counter-clockwise.
Will rotating reduce video quality?
Rotation requires re-encoding the video frames, which introduces a small quality reduction. The output uses H.264 at a high quality setting to minimise this.
What is the difference between rotate 180° and flip both axes?
Rotate 180° turns the image upside down while preserving left-right order. Flipping both axes gives the same visual result but via a different filter.
Can I add transitions to my rotated video?
Yes. You can add a fade-in or fade-out transition (from 22 effects) after rotating or flipping your video.
Metadata Rotation vs. Pixel Rotation
Fixing only the metadata flag is tempting because it's faster, but metadata-only fixes break in older players, social media uploads, and video editing tools that ignore rotation tags. FileCrank physically rotates the pixel data and strips the metadata flag, producing universally correct output. The trade-off is slightly longer processing time — almost always worth it.
