How Video Watermarking Works
Text watermarks use FFmpeg's `drawtext` filter, which renders a font string at specified coordinates using FreeType for vector-quality rendering at any resolution. Transparency (alpha) is applied at the filter level so the underlying video is partially visible through the text. Image watermarks use the `overlay` filter, which composites a second input (the logo file, decoded from PNG or SVG) onto the video stream at the target position and opacity.
Both approaches re-encode the video, since the frame data changes on every frame. The watermark element itself is static per frame (no animation), so the computational cost is the standard encode cost plus the lightweight compositing step. For semi-transparent logos, the alpha channel of the PNG is used directly in the blend equation.
